The Rail Shop Worker II is responsible for the routine operation of repairs and for performing basic welding in the rail car repair shop.
Job Parameters
The Rail Shop Worker II reports to the Railcar Repai! r Manager, along with other shop employees.
1. Perform routine welding of light and heavy gauge metal and occasionally performing vertical welding.
2. Assemble individual rail parts into basic finished products, and assist in more complex repair work.
3. Demonstrate initiative in learning more technical repairs and welding skills according to A.A.R. specifications.
4. Perform housekeeping activities including maintaining the rail shop in a neat and orderly condition, and provide parts, tools, and supplies to other personnel as requested.
5. Perform repair tasks as assigned including but not limited to the following as well as all duties performed by Workers 3âs:
1. Know how to use all âRule 1â gauges
2. Remove and replace draft gear
3. Remove and replace slack adjuster
4. Remove and replace a pipe bracket
5. Single car air brake test
6. Repair and build draft pocket

7. Disassembling the trucks
8. Changing a wheel ! and filling out a wheel reading sheet
9. Remove and replace friction castings (ride control and drop in)
10. Repair gravity and pneumatic hopper gates
11. Repair box car doors (plug and sliding)
12. Proper stencil location and information
13. Remove and replace an uncoupling lever (telescoping and non-telescoping)
14. Remove and take apart a coupler
15. Remove and replace brake levers
16. Remove and replace an angle cock
17. Jacking a car
18. Applying constant contacts
19. Remove and update AEI tags
Human Relations
The incumbent must possess basic human relations skills in being able to work effectively as a member of a team in completing rail car repair jobs as assigned.
Instructions Received
The incumbent operates from instructions which are both oral and written. Verbal directions are received from the manager or foreman. The Rail Shop Wo! rker II performs basic skills under supervision from the manager/foreman or a Rail Shop Worker I.
Working Conditions
There is constant exposure to noise and occasional exposure to extreme temperatures, dust, and fumes. Also, there is considerable lifting of rail car parts, sheet metal and other materials, equipment, and tools. The incumbent is exposed to gas fumes, blow torch flames, and welding arcs. The incumbent must be able to do any of the following for long periods of time:
Sitting
Standing - while holding a torch or other repair equipment
Climbing - will need to climb on ladders, on top of railcars and other equipment
Walking
Lifting - 50lbs+
Pulling and/or Pushing - certain tools and parts in order to properly repair
Carrying - large/heavy railcar parts or tools
Grasping - various railcar parts or tools
Reaching - for various railcar parts or tools
Stooping an! d Crouching - under or beside railcars and other equipment
Cra! wling - under railcars or other equipment while performing the repairs
Background
This position involves the application of basic knowledge in hopper car repair and welding work that is obtained from one to three years of direct experience and/or education in each of the areas of repair outlined in the A.A.R. Field Manual. The incumbent must also be able to read and have basic mathematical skills to perform simple calculations. Incumbent must be able to pass one of the following: a wire feed, 7018 stick, or 6010 stick overhead; and vertical up test administered by The Andersonâs certified Welding Instructor.
Incumbent must be eligible to drive for The Andersons Inc.

Principal Accountabilities
The following accountabilities are to be carried out in a manner consistent with the spirit and philosophy outlined in The Andersons' Statement of Principles:
1. Employee must understand and comply with all PPE requirements as well as actively participate in safety related tasks such as daily safety briefings and JSA's (Job Safety Analysis). Completing every job safely should be taken into account with everything that is completed.
2. Assist with basic repairs on damaged cars.
3. Operate machinery in the layout and assembly of routine rail car repair jobs, paying particular attention to proper safety practices as well as the efficiency of production work.
4. Perform basic welding operations involving some vertical and overhead welding of light, as well as heavy gauge metal according to proper assembly strength requirements, with emphasis on proper safety practices.
5. Cont! inue to develop on an ongoing basis more technical skills in repair and! welding work based on learning experience provided in the rail shop.
6. Perform housekeeping activities as needed; obtain or transfer parts, supplies, material, and tools as requested.
7. Contribute effectively toward a "team" concept in the rail car shop, maintaining a positive working relationship with coworkers and displaying pride in assuring quality workmanship in the rail car shop.
