Job Description
Please Note: Position only open to internal NYC Department ! of Education employees
Position Summary: The New York City school system is the largest in the country, composed of approximately 1.1 million students and 75,000+ teachers in over 1,700 schools. In January 2003, the Department of Education (DOE) launched Children First: A New Agenda for Public Schools in New York City, a multi-year reform effort aimed at significantly improving student achievement through effective teaching and learning.
Among the central tenets of the Children First reform effort is setting clear expectations for high quality practice and empowering schools by providing educators the tools and resources needed to meet those expectations and improve student achievement. In 2010, New York State adopted the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS). In order to support New York City schools with integration of these new, higher standards, the DOE launched the Citywide Instructional Expectations (CIE) in 2010-11. These expectations articul! ate a focused path toward full implementation of the Common Co! re by the 2014-15 school year. To strengthen this work, the DOE is engaging in a large-scale, coordinated effort to support the development of effective high-quality instructional resources and practices. Building a shared understanding about what student and teacher work look like when aligned to the expectations of the Common Core is an important leverage point for professional development and the success of our students. The Office of Achievement Resources (OAR) supports the implementation of the CIE through:
design and implementation of the Children First Intensive (CFI) professional development (PD) forums for cluster and network instructional teams;
delivery of Achievement Support Initiatives (ASI) that provide intensive coaching and professional development directly to selected schools and network teams;
piloting of approaches to Common Core standards implementation in a small group of lab schools;
design and delivery of Common Cor! e curriculum PD;
provision of on-demand support with technology tools through the DAPS Service Desk; and
development of education policies, strategic funding of those policies, and evaluating the impact of policy, professional development, and resources.
The Project Associate â" Common Core Support will work closely with Directors within OAR and Instructional Coaches supporting the planning, design and implementation of each work stream associated with professional development sessions, including Common Core Curriculum PD, CFI Achievement Institutes, Lab and Learning sessions and ASI intensive coaching and professional development sessions. The Project Associate will also maintain working relationships with participating field staff by providing information about the sessions, updates, curriculum and topics to be covered.
