Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services is seeking an Associate General Counsel to work in its New York office providing general legal counseling in support of its ratings business. The candidate must be a highly motivated team player with superior legal ability, written and oral presentation skills and superior interpersonal and communication skills.

Accountabilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Perform legal work in support of ratings analytical process which includes:

review of legal opinions, legal structure and other applicable legal issues;

review, revision and development of criteria for appropriate consideration and analysis of legal issues;

analyze and interpret laws and regulations in support of ratings analysis to keep analysts up to date on legal developments that may impact their analysis;

provide thought leadership to further strategic goals of transparency and market education with respect to legal criteria and methodologies;

prepare and conduct internal training on legal matters to assist in analytic training;

Perform legal work in support of ratings analytical process which includes:

provide counseling in support of Ratings Services’ Quality and Criteria functions;

counsel Ratings Services’ personnel in connection with their speaking engagements, publications and other outreach efforts;

provide support in connection with key Ratings Services’ agreements;

Lead and/or participate in special projects promoting either analytic or general legal counseling matters.

Qualifications

Qualifications include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Law degree, active member of the New York State Bar
  • Significant experience in structured finance in either major law firm or in-house position
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and negotiation skills, including the ability to influence others who are not in the same line of authority
  • Excellent presentation, writing and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and listening skills with internal/external audiences
  • Self-motivated and well organized with the ability to handle multiple, high-priority projects while attending to details; able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure
  • Hands-on, energetic and a motivated self-starter
  • Professional demeanor, team player, ability to interface effectively with internal/external parties
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
