JOB SUMMARY
Serves as a member of the Secondary English Office to support the implementation of a comprehensive secondary English program by writing standards-based curricula and assessments and providing professional development and other supports to ensure best practices in secondary English instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Acts as a strategic and collaborative member of the content team to communicate AACPS philosophy, goals, and expectations of assessment, curriculum, and instruction to school staff and the community.
  • Assists teachers and school-based administration with implementation and ongoing enhancement of a comprehensive English program which engages students in relevant discourse and rigorous coursework aligned to the Maryland state standards for English.
  • Works with school leadership, department chairpersons, and school teams facilitating collaborative planning to enhance teacher capacity with reading and writing instruction. Visits schools to observe, support, and model instructional practices and curriculum implementation, provide targeted feedback and assists with data-driven decisions about instructional planning.
  • Designs and coaches teachers in using innovative strategies, materials and activities aligned to best practices. Leads professional development initiatives for individual teachers, school teams, and teachers at school and district level meetings to model best practices in classroom instruction based on the standards and create a student-centered learning environment. Plans and implements professional development for teachers and school teams to model best practices that are aligned to state standards.
  • Works with the Coordinator to develop and review curricula and ensure alignment to state standards. Researches, evaluates, and participates in the selection processes of materials of instruction and resources that support the curriculum following AACPS practices for adoption.
  • Works with the Coordinator and other staff to develop assessments which are aligned to the curriculum and the state standards. Collaborates with various teams to analyze data and support teachers in the implementation of data driven instruction.
  • Collaborates with local, state offices, programs, magnet, and content offices to enrich reading and writing instruction across the content and program areas.
  • Collaborates with other Reading offices and school administration to analyze intervention data and manage the articulation process. Supports the reading intervention program by coaching intervention teachers and facilitating professional development.
  • Serves in the absence of the Coordinator of Secondary English, as needed, in all responsibilities as assigned.
  • Facilitates the development and supports the implementation of evening and weekend initiatives, summer programs, workshops, and countywide events hosted by the Office of Secondary English.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education
  • Master's Degree in applicable field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
Experience
  • Four (4) years successful classroom teaching experience in Secondary English or related work required.
  • One (1) year experience providing professional development to adult learners preferred.
  • One (1) year experience as a school-based teacher leader preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
  • Ability to work effectively at any applicable grade level, with a variety of courses, and with diverse groups of students.
  • Demonstrated background and strengths in secondary literacy and reading.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities in English, Reading and or Literacy education.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications with professional colleagues, staff, students, and parents.
  • Experience with and commitment to develop and improve English electives, publications, and or/productions.
  • Proficiency in instructional technology.
  • Documented experience in curriculum, professional development, and assessment development.
  • Availability for summer curriculum and professional development work.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite -Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).
Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
  • Hold or be eligible for Educator Certification: Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.
